AMBER LEIS, M.D.
Dr. Amber Leis (SHS Class of 1998). Distinguished Professor, Preeminent Surgeon, Mentor.
Born and raised in Sisters, Dr. Leis graduated from SHS in 1998 as valedictorian. She
attended OSU’s Honors College and graduated Suma Cum Laude in 2003 (Honors BS in
Microbiology). She received her MD at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, completed an
integrated plastic surgery residency at Loma Linda University in California, and received the
prestigious Boyes Hand Fellowship at the University of Southern California. She presently is
the Residency Program Director / Division Chief for Plastic Hand surgery at the University
of California, Irvine. She focuses on pediatric and congenital hand, brachial plexus birth
injuries, adult traumatic brachial plexus injuries and peripheral nerve injuries.
Dr. Leis is passionate about education and mentorship and regularly teaches medical
students, residents and fellows about her specialties. Among her dozens of awards and
honors, Dr. Leis received a grant in 2022 from the American Foundation for Surgery of the
Hand, was the recipient of the national 2023 Visiting Professor award from the American
Society of Plastic Surgeons, was honored with the national 2023 Best Faculty Teacher award
from the American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons, and presented at the
International Federation for Societies of Surgery of the Hand conference in London in 2022.
Her journey from SHS to UCI is a testament to her unwavering commitment to healing,
teaching, and inspiring the next generation of medical professionals.
